Osteoarthritis (OA)

Are you experiencing pain in your joints?  Does this pain and discomfort make it difficult for you to enjoy activities?  If you have not experienced recent trauma to the joint and are approaching middle age or older, you may be experiencing osteoarthritis (OA) or degenerative doint disease (DJD).  Typically, this is a condition that occurs over time, often described as “wear and tear” of the joints.  It can also be associated with a prior injury or with excessive wear through years of vigorous activity.  In other words, if you work hard and play hard, you might be paying your dues.

Symptoms can range widely from mild (some occasional soreness) to quite severe (extreme, even disabling pain).  The joint may feel stiff, swollen, and even look deformed in some cases.  Occasionally, the joint might be sore in the mornings and feel better with certain activities.  OA can even progress to the point where it becomes debilitating if left untreated.

Medically what may be occurring is bone and joint erosion. When this damage begins, joint erosion can progress leading to pain in many cases.  The best course of treatment is early intervention.  This can help you manage the condition and ensure you can stay active and productive.

The first step is to set up an appointment for an evaluation and examination, with a physiatrist, also known as a physical medicine and rehabilitation specialist, or with an orthopedist, to understand what the underlying issue is.  The earlier osteoarthritis is diagnosed, the more effectively it can be addressed, and the easier it may be to return to necessary activities.  Dr. Zaman is focused on the non-surgical care of conditions, such as osteoarthritis.

He will focus on identifying the causes of your condition and can address the associated pain and inflammation.  He may recommend imaging studies such as x-ray, MRI, or CT Scan, or lifestyle changes such as rest or exercises.  It might be helpful to incorporate some form of physical therapy or other modalities.  For more complex cases, he may suggest utilizing certain medications.  Some cases may improve with a simple injection of specialized medicines directly into the joint.

If you suspect you may have osteoarthritis, or are experiencing any of these symptoms, give us an opportunity to work with you to provide you with an accurate diagnosis, and improve your quality of life.  Dr. Zaman has successfully treated tens of thousands with osteoarthritis and degenerative joint disease over the last two decades.  Contact our office for an appointment.
